Michael (Christian) Nehls
I am a physician (MD) and molecular geneticist (PhD) with a long career devoted to successfully deciphering
the genetic causes of various hereditary diseases.
I led research groups at a number of laboratories, the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, and at
universities in the U.S. and Germany, including UC San Diego, University of Frankfurt, University of Hanover,
University of Freiburg and University of Heidelberg.
I authored over 50 scientific publications, two of which were with two different Nobel Prize winners. One of my
team’s discoveries was recently honored by the American Association of Immunologists as a
"pillar of immunologic research" for leading investigators in the identification of a key molecular switch required
for the development of our adaptive immune system.
My experience includes work in the pharmaceutical industry.
For 3+ years, I was the leading genomic researcher for a U.S. company (Lexicon Pharmaceticals Inc.)
Following that, for 8 years, I was the CEO and CSO (Chief Scientific Officer) of the Munich-based biotechnology
company (Ingenium Pharmaceuticals AG) until its successful merger with Probiodrug AG (Halle/Saale, Germany)
another biopharmaceutical firm, active in Alzheimer’s drug research.
Since 2007, I have worked as a freelance theoretical medical scientist with the goal of uncovering the causes
of modern lifestyle diseases using my medical, neuroscientifiic and evolutionary biological knowledge.
As a scientific author, I lecture at congresses and universities.
In 2015, I was awarded the "Hanse Prize for Psychiatry" by the University Hospital of Rostock, Germany, for my
pioneering discoveries in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's Disease.
In 2008 and 2010, I became an official finisher in the solo rider category of the Race Across America,
a 3000 mile long non-stop bicycle race.
I am married; my wife Sabine and I have 3 adult children.
